🌽 DIABETES MELLITUS 🌽

~ What is the Cause?

🥒 Diabetes Mellitus occurs when the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin, or when the body fails to use the insulin properly, leading to increased blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia).

🥒 Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood.

🥒 Diabetes can be caused by having too little insulin in the body, the body not responding to insulin effectively, or a combination of both. To fully understand diabetes, it's important to know how food is broken down and used by the body to create energy.

🥒 When food is digested, several events occur:

  1. First, glucose, which is a source of energy for the body, enters the bloodstream.
  2. Second, the pancreas produces insulin. Insulin's role is to remove glucose from the bloodstream and direct it into muscles, fat cells, and the liver where it is stored for energy.

🥒 People with diabetes have high levels of blood sugar because their bodies cannot move sugar into the cells for energy storage.

🥒 This is due to the following reasons:

  1. The pancreas does not produce enough insulin.
  2. The body's cells do not respond to insulin as they should, or a combination of both issues.

🥫 TYPES OF DIABETES 🥫

1⃣ TYPE 1 DIABETES 🍬 - 🥫 TYPE 1 DIABETES MELLITUS 🥫

🥒 This type of diabetes mainly affects children and young adults. It occurs when the specialized cells that produce insulin in the pancreas are absent or destroyed, leading to little or no insulin production.

🥒 Factors that may cause the destruction of these cells in the pancreas include autoimmune diseases, where the body attacks itself, or unknown triggers.

2⃣ TYPE 2 DIABETES 🥫 - 🥫 TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS 🥫

🥒 This type of diabetes is more common in adults. It occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin, or when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to meet the body’s needs.

🥒 This is often caused by being overweight (obesity) or leading an inactive lifestyle. Even though insulin is produced in sufficient quantities, the problem lies in its efficiency and functionality.

3⃣ GESTATIONAL DIABETES 🍖 - (GESTATIONAL DIABETES MELLITUS)

🥒 This type of diabetes occurs during pregnancy when blood sugar levels rise (hyperglycemia).

🥒 It affects approximately 2-5% of all pregnant women, and most recover after childbirth.

🥒 However, 20-50% of women who experience gestational diabetes may go on to develop Type 2 diabetes later in life.

🥫 CAUSES OF DIABETES 🥫

🥒 The causes of diabetes vary depending on the type. Type 1 diabetes is largely inherited and may be triggered by infections from viruses like Coxsackie virus type B4.

🥒 Other causes include chemical toxins found in some foods (food-borne chemical toxins) and, in some infants, cow’s milk might trigger the immune system to attack the body, damaging the pancreas.

🥒 Type 2 diabetes is generally caused by lifestyle factors and genetic issues. Obesity is a significant cause, as is age, a sedentary lifestyle, and lack of exercise. Pancreatitis, a condition affecting the pancreas, can also reduce insulin effectiveness.

🥫 SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES 🥫

  • Frequent urination.
  • Excessive thirst and drinking a lot of water (polydipsia).
  • Increased hunger and frequent eating (polyphagia).
  • Fatigue.
  • Weight loss.
  • Skin rashes (diabetic dermadromes).
  • A smell of acetone in the breath, similar to alcohol.
  • Abdominal pain and loss of consciousness.

🥒 Diabetic patients are also more prone to infections of the bladder, skin, and in women, genital infections.
