Reasons for Uterus Removal
The medical procedure for removing the uterus is called a hysterectomy.
The uterus can be removed due to:
A. Cervical Cancer
Cancer in the uterus or cervix may be a reason for removing the uterus, depending on the stage of the cancer.
The presence of infections such as discharge or fluids increases the likelihood of developing cervical cancer if left untreated.
B. Uterine Fibroids
Not all fibroids in the uterus require a hysterectomy. Doctors often consider various factors associated with the condition, for example:
- The fibroid is very large, and the woman does not plan to have more children, which may lead to the decision to remove the uterus.
However, undergoing surgery at a young age with the intent of having children later can result in scarring of the uterus, making it difficult to conceive. Therefore, alternative medications are often used to shrink the fibroids and strengthen the uterus overall.
C. Chronic Pelvic Pain
Frequently, a hysterectomy is a last resort for women suffering from chronic pelvic pain caused by uterine conditions such as endometriosis, PID (discharge, fluids, odor, one-sided abdominal pain, lower abdominal pain, heavy menstrual bleeding or changes in periods, loss of sexual desire, dryness and abrasions, etc.).
D. Placenta Accreta
This condition is medically referred to as placenta accreta. It occurs during pregnancy.
- It happens when the placenta penetrates and embeds itself in the muscular wall of the uterus.
- This leads to severe bleeding and intense abdominal pain.
Treatment typically involves a cesarean section and removal of the uterus if the placenta has deeply attached to the uterus.
NOTE: The good news is that all these conditions can be treated visit your nearest health center to prevent reaching the point of needing a hysterectomy or facing other complications like cancer. When you notice symptoms like discharge, fluids, or odor, address them promptly to avoid further complications like blocked fallopian tubes (fluid accumulation) or cervical cancer. Treating with the appropriate medication not only resolves the issue but also strengthens the entire reproductive system and hormonal balance.
